Kilauea Daily Update for 10/30/07
Current Kilauea status from HVO:
Kilauea Daily Update issued Oct 30, 2007 11:15 HST Volcanic-Alert Level WATCH - Aviation Color Code ORANGE
Report prepared by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO):Activity Summary: The 7/21 eruption continued to supply lava to a channel that refilled to overflowing by midnight and remained full. Seep-fed flows continued to be active from both the north and south flanks of the channel. A flow along the southern flow field margin was burning a forested kipuka near Kalalua Cone.
Hazard Summary: There are no immediate threats directly from lava flows. A publication describing the current and future hazards posed by this eruption is available at http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2007/1264/.
Vent areas and lava channels are hazardous and conditions can change rapidly. Access to the 7/21 eruption site in the Kahauale`a Natural Area Reserve is closed (see http://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/chair/pio/HtmlNR/07-N076.htm). Wao Kele o Puna is also closed. Lava flows advancing through vegetation are hazardous and can produce fire and methane explosions that propel chunks of lava and rock several feet into the air.
Last 24 hours at 7/21 eruption site: The level of lava in the channel again rose during the day initiating a few overflows by midnight; the level was still high this morning. The north and south channel seeps also remained active; the north seep was particularly active overnight. Flows along the southern flow field margin continued to burn a forested kipuka just north of Kalalua Cone. The webcam is hampered by rain but still allowed some views: there are no signs of activity at the front of the pahoehoe flow along the northern margin and some scattered incandescence near the channel end.
Last 24 hours at Pu`u `O`o crater: No significant changes - Fume and dark in the webcam. The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded no significant changes but GPS receivers continued to record contraction of the cone. Seismic tremor levels remained at low values.
Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: The summit tiltmeters recorded no coherent (in one direction) tilt changes. GPS receivers recorded slowed contraction across the caldera consistent with deflation of a summit source. A few small earthquakes were located beneath the south flank faults including a few in the same area as the magnitude-4.0 a few days ago. Seismic tremor levels remained at low values.
ffffffffffff
