Anatahan Weekly Update for 10/12/07
Current Anatahan status from HVO-CNMI:
Anatahan Weekly Update issued Oct 12, 2007 11:18 MPT Volcanic-Alert Level NORMAL - Aviation Color Code GREEN
Report prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey. With this report, we move from bi-weekly updates to weekly updates coming out each Friday. The aviation color code for Anatahan was lowered from Yellow to GREEN today and the alert level from Advisory to NORMAL. Seismic activity had increased markedly September 9, reaching peak levels on September 11 and 24 before decreasing. Activity has been at or near background since October 1. Occasional seismic activity persists, but the signals suggest that activity is more hydrothermal than volcanic. No volcanic haze and sulfur advisories were issued by the CNMI Emergency Management Office (EMO) this week. Some gas emission and steaming from Anatahan may still occur. During more northerly winds, the Anatahan plume will be blown towards CNMI and Guam and may be experienced as a sulfur-scented haze. The EMO will issue a volcanic haze and sulfur advisory when appropriate. Access to the island may be restricted by the CNMI government. Check with CNMI Emergency Management Office to get the latest information. contact information: duty scientist (808) 967-8815 http://volcano.wr.usgs.gov/cnmistatus.php
